While the Kindle offers goodies that a simpler device like the Pocket lacks, it also costs more. Ultimately, if Sony can make this cost $150 or less, they’ll be on to something. However, this past Presidents’ Weekend, a number of big-box retailers, such as Best Buy, were running a special on the Pocket, bringing the price down below $200. For not much less money, you get none of those affordances with the Pocket.
Kindle does a lot of things that the Pocket doesn’t you can conceive of Kindle as a “service” rather than just a piece of hardware: you can buy books right on the Kindle you can search you can highlight and annotate text and have it sync up with other devices, just as you can with the Kindle’s books themselves.
